Chelsea blow as president rules out £16m defender making transfer
Napoli have ruled out Kalidou Koulibaly leaving the club this summer amid Chelsea interest
Kalidou Koulibaly will be staying at Napoli beyond the summer transfer window despite interest from Chelsea, according to the club’s president.
The African defender has been linked with a move to the Premier League side in recent weeks as new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte looks to exploit his knowledge of Serie A ahead of the 2016/17 season.
Koulibaly was a regular in the Napoli side at centre-half last season as the Naples-based outfit finished in second place in the Serie A table behind perennial champions Juventus.
Chelsea were thought to be ready to put together a package to sign the Senegal international as Conte looks to strengthen his defensive options despite John Terry’s new deal.
However, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis is adamant that Koulibaly will not be leaving the Stadio San Paolo in the near future despite Premier League interest.
“I have never quarrelled with Koulibaly. He will remain with us for another three years,” De Laurentiis told Kiss Kiss Radio.
“If he wants to renew his contract with us to five years then we will meet but the deal must satisfy both parties, because these relationships are never one-sided.”
Chelsea finished in ninth place in the Premier League table last season.
