Exclusive: Liverpool blow as £12m defender set to remain at Arsenal
The Sport Review can reveal that Liverpool's proposed move for Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs is off
Liverpool won’t be signing Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs this summer, The Sport Review has learned.
The England defender has been heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks after Gibbs fell behind Nacho Monreal in the pecking order under manager Arsene Wenger last season.
The 26-year-old full-back started just three Premier League games in the 2015/16 campaign, although the Arsenal left-back did make a further 12 top-flight appearances from the bench.
Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a host of left-backs in the summer transfer window following Alberto Moreno’s disastrous performance in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League final.
But Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli has told The Sport Review that Liverpool’s touted move for Gibbs is off despite Arsenal being keen to offload some defenders this summer.
Giulianelli said: “Deal cooled down. But Arsenal want to sell in that part of the pitch.”
Gibbs, who has two years remaining on his current deal with the Gunners, has scored two goals in 208 appearances in all competitions for the north London side.
Liverpool were thought to be interested in Lorient left-back Raphael Guerriero before the Portuguese defender moved to Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund earlier this month.
Klopp will also have Joe Gomez to contend with Moreno for the left-back spot after the England Under-21 international missed most of the 2015/16 season due to a serious knee injury.
