Martin Keown comments on striker’s proposed transfer to Arsenal
Martin Keown delivers his verdict on Arsenal's reported pursuit of Jamie Vardy in the summer transfer window
Martin Keown believes that Jamie Vardy could end up being the missing link for Arsenal as the striker continues to mull over a transfer to Emirates Stadium.
Widespread media reports over the weekend have claimed that Vardy has been offered a lucrative four-year contract by the Gunners after the club met the £20m release clause in his Leicester City contract.
Vardy flew to France with the rest of the England squad on Monday morning as the Three Lions prepare for Euro 2016.
While there has been no official word on the move, it is being widely reported that Vardy is pondering his options, with Arsenal’s offer still on the table.
Former Arsenal defender Keown feels that Vardy could be the man to help propel the Gunners to the title after the north London side finished second last season.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 888sport, Keown said: “If you look at Vardy and you look at what Arsenal don’t have down the middle with their strikers – someone who likes to run behind a defence – then if you feed him he’s a real handful and as good as anyone.
“He’d be a player who would strengthen Arsenal and give them more variation to their play which they lack down that central area.”
Vardy scored 24 goals as Leicester won the Premier League last season, while Arsenal finished second and 10 points behind the champions.
