Neville makes prediction about Mourinho and Man United fans
Phil Neville has his say about Jose Mourinho's appointment as Manchester United's new manager
Phil Neville is backing Jose Mourinho to be a big hit amongst Manchester United fans in the seasons to come.
The Portuguese coach was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor on a three-year contract last week after months of speculation linking him with the Old Trafford role.
Former Chelsea boss Mourinho is already believed to be working on revamping his squad ahead of his first season in charge at Old Trafford as he gears up for an immediate return to Premier League management.
And former United defender Neville is convinced that Mourinho is the right man to restore the club to the top of English football.
Speaking to United’s website, Neville said: “I looked at that photo of him holding the [United] shirt and he looked like a United manager.
“He looked class and the words that were coming out of his mouth told you this is something he’s always wanted to do.
“I’m excited for the season ahead. With Jose, win, lose or draw, it’s going to be an adventure and a journey.
“Maybe the United fans need that now. They need lifting, they need a spark and someone who will keep them on the edge all the time.
“This club keeps you on the edge; you don’t know whether it’s going to go one way or the other in games. That’s what was so great about Sir Alex Ferguson.”
United finished fifth last season and won the FA Cup in what was Louis van Gaal’s final game in charge of the Red Devils.
The club have not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.
