Paul Ince: This is who Jose Mourinho must sign for Man United this summer
Paul Ince discusses Manchester United's remaining plans for the summer transfer window
Paul Ince has told Jose Mourinho that Manchester United are in dire need of some more midfield options ahead of next season.
The Portuguese coach is currently gearing up for his first season in charge at Old Trafford after being appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor last month.
Mourinho wrapped up his first signing as Manchester United boss last week as the Red Devils confirmed the capture of defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal.
However, former United star Ince feels that Mourinho’s focus should now be on bolstering the Red Devils’ midfield options as he prepares for the new season.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Ince said: “United need some one to energise them in the centre of the field.
“That wasn’t a Manchester United midfield last season, there were no legs in the department.
“In the last two campaigns under Louis van Gaal United have been very light in midfield. It was slow and ponderous.
“You look at Leicester City winning the title and what did they have? In midfield they had two players prepared to give the team that energy in N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater.
“Not the most obvious stand-out players around. They were not your glamorous names but they did a stunning job for Claudio Ranieri. You have to have those kind of players in a team if you want to be successful.
“United didn’t. They were far too slow and easily overrun. There was no steel, there was no pace, no runners, no power. There was no Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira in the middle taking control.”
United moved quickly to appoint Mourinho as Van Gaal’s successor, just days after the Dutchman led the club to the FA Cup title.
The Red Devils finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season, meaning they will have to settle for Europa League football next term.
