Phil Thompson makes bold claim about new Liverpool signing
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has questioned the £34m signing of Sadio Mane
Phil Thompson has accused Liverpool of paying over the odds for new signing Sadio Mane.
The Reds completed a £34m deal for the Senegal international on Tuesday afternoon as Mane became the second-most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history.
Mane, who has signed a long-term deal with the Reds, scored 11 goals and made six assists in 37 Premier League appearances in his second season at Southampton.
However, former Liverpool captain and assistant manager Thompson believes the Reds have paid too much for the Senegal forward despite his proven goal-scoring record in the Premier League.
“I think we’ve paid far too much for him,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
Mane scored 21 times in 67 Premier League appearances for the Saints after he completed an £11.8m move to English side Southampton from Swiss outfit Red Bull Salzburg in 2014.
The 24-year-old forward is Jurgen Klopp’s second signing of the summer after the Liverpool manager snapped up Loris Karius in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga side Mainz earlier this summer.
