Granit Xhaka will be wearing Arsenal's number 29 shirt next season
Granit Xhaka has revealed that he will wear Arsenal’s number 29 shirt next season.
The Switzerland international – who had initially been handed the number 16 shirt – completed a £33m move to Arsenal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach last week after weeks of speculation linking the midfielder with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
Xhaka has signed a five-year deal with the north London side after becoming their third most-expensive signing of all-time behind Germany star Mesut Ozil and former Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.
And the 23-year-old, who was previously linked with Liverpool, has opted to take on Arsenal’s No29 shirt for his first season at The Emirates outfit as Xhaka looks to justify his transfer fee.
Xhaka posted the above photo and wrote: “My new number for the next season #gunnergranit29”
The reason behind his decision to switch is understood to be because the number 29 is the year of his birth – 1992 – backwards.
The Swiss midfielder will be part of his country’s squad for this summer’s Euro 2016 tournament in France.
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table after a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa on the final day of the season.
