Tottenham blow as Barcelona enter the race for £20m Morocco star – report
Tottenham face competition from Barcelona for Lille's Morocco star, according to London Evening Standard
Tottenham are facing competition from Barcelona for the signing of Morocco star Sofiane Boufal, according to Evening Standard.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder emerged as a target for the north London side in recent weeks as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bolster his squad after falling just short in the Premier League title race last season.
The Lille midfielder scored 11 times and made four assists in 29 Ligue 1 appearances for the French club last season, attracting interest from a host of top European clubs.
Tottenham were thought to be scouting the African playmaker at the end of the season ahead of a potential move for the Moroccan in the summer transfer window.
However, Boufal’s agent has confirmed that Barcelona are interested in the highly-rated Lille star in what will come as a blow to Tottenham’s hopes of signing a player dubbed the new Riyad Mahrez.
“We did have a meeting with the leadership of FC Barcelona in the last few weeks,” Yvan Lee Mee is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard. “There is an interest.
“Now the reflection is whether Sofiane Boufal will go to Barcelona to compete with MSN (Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar) or should he go to a club where he is going to start matches and express his exceptional talent.”
Tottenham finished in third place in the Premier League table behind Arsenal after a four-game winless run to end the season.
