Axel Witsel has confirmed that he wants to play in the Premier League next season amid reported interest from Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgium international was part of Marc Wilmots’s side that suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat by Italy in their opening European championship fixture.

Witsel has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United after speculation suggesting the Zenit St Petersburg star wants to play in England.

Everton and Tottenham emerged as potential destinations for the Belgium star, with a number of Witsel’s team-mates already at White Hart Lane.

The 27-year-old confirmed that he wants to move to the Premier League after a four-year spell at Russian club Zenit.

“I’d like to play next season in the Premier League or Italy. I would like to try a new experience in another league; a new challenge,” Witzel told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I hope to go to the next level and play in a big European club. It doesn’t matter if I go to Serie A or the Premier League, just that I go to a big club.”

Witsel has emerged as one of new Everton manager Ronald Koeman’s top targets after the Dutchman swapped St Mary’s for Goodison Park earlier this week.
