Antonio Conte reveals his delight at seeing Chelsea complete the signing of N'Golo Kante from Leicester
Antonio Conte has revealed his delight at seeing Chelsea wrap up the signing of N’Golo Kante from Leicester City over the weekend.
The France international midfielder signed a five-year contract with the west London club after opting to quit Leicester and the prospect of Champions League football next season to join the Blues.
Kante’s future had been a relentless source of speculation in recent weeks and the midfielder had been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge before the deal was finally confirmed on Saturday afternoon.
And newly-appointed Chelsea boss Conte was delighted to see the transfer go through on Saturday.
Speaking at his news conference after Chelsea’s 2-0 pre-season friendly defeat at the hands of Rapid Vienna, Conte said: “I want to say Kante was a target and for this reason I’m very happy the club bought the player.
“He’s a good player. He has good technique, fantastic stamina and I like this type of player. If you want to win a team needs this type of player – Kante, Matic and Mikel – that work hard for the team.
“We identified him, me and the club together, and I think Kante can give a lot to Chelsea, to enforce a zone which is very important if we want to play with two central midfielders. He showed last season he’s able to play with another midfielder. I think with this player we’ve reinforced the squad.”
Conte was selected as Chelsea’s new manager last season after the club opted to sack Jose Mourinho back in December.
The Italian has been tasked with steering Chelsea back to the top of English football after their disappointing 10th-placed finish last season in the Premier League table.
