Antonio Conte provides latest Chelsea transfer update on Spain striker
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is adamant that Diego Costa will be staying at Stamford Bridge this summer
Antonio Conte says Diego Costa will remain a Chelsea player beyond the summer transfer window.
The Spain international is set to play under his third Chelsea manager since Costa completed a move to Stamford Bridge in a £32m deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in 2014.
Costa scored 20 times in 27 Premier League appearances in their title-winning campaign under Jose Mourinho in 2014/15 but only managed to find the net on 11 occasions last term.
Conte continues to be linked with a number of strikers in the summer transfer window, even though the west London side have already snapped up Michy Batshuayi in a £34m deal from Ligue 1 side Marseille.
Speaking at a media conference in Austria on Tuesday, Conte shed light on his plans for Costa amid talk of a possible return to Spain before the end of the summer transfer window.
“Diego is our player,” Conte is quoted as saying by Chelsea’s website.
“He is a fantastic player, a player with a fundamental importance and there is no problem.
“He stays with us, he is working very hard, he is very happy to work with his team-mates and with me in the new idea of football. He is a Chelsea player.
“He is an important player, a very strong player, one of the best in the world, and I am sure when he goes into our ideas he will score a lot of goals for us.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season after a disappointing defence of their top-flight crown.
The west London side have also signed Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante in a £30m deal at the weekend.
