Arsene Wenger confirms latest Arsenal transfer plan
Arsene Wenger confirms that Arsenal are in the market for an experienced defender after Per Mertesacker's injury
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are in the market to sign a new defender in the summer transfer window after news of Per Mertesacker’s injury setback.
The German defender has been ruled out of action for a number of months after undergoing knee surgery following the injury picked up during Arsenal’s pre-season friendly clash with Lens last week.
Arsenal have already signed one defender in the form of 20-year-old centre-half Rob Holding this summer.
However, the Arsenal boss has revealed that the north London side are likely to reenter the market for another defender following Mertesacker’s injury.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of Arsenal’s clash with an MLS All-Stars side, Wenger said: “We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience.
“We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well. With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and 10 points behind surprise champions Leicester City.
The Gunners – who ended last season without a trophy – have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
