Arsene Wenger delivers verdict on France star linked with Arsenal move
Arsene Wenger runs the rule over Arsenal target Moussa Sissoko
Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on France midfielder Moussa Sissoko after the Newcastle United midfielder’s impressive performances at Euro 2016.
The Magpies star has been an important members of Didier Deschamps’s squad throughout the European championship despite the disappointment of Newcastle’s relegation from the Premier League.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for the former Lyon man earlier this month as the Newcastle midfielder continues to impress in the major tournament on French soil.
Wenger has been linked with a host of players in the summer transfer window, although the Gunners boss has only signed Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka and Japanese forward Takuma Asano so far.
But the Arsenal manager fanned speculation linking Sissoko with a move to the Emirates Stadium after delivering a glowing assessment of the France midfielder.
“Football is made of opinions, and it is important not to be ashamed of being wrong,” Wenger is quoted as saying by London Evening Standard. “The evidence is that I have been in football for 40 years and I’m still wrong.
“It is true that Sissoko has been remarkable. One could have asked the question before the [Germany] game: does [N’Golo] Kante come into the eleven? Didier has opted for stability since the team had won convincingly and he had reason to do so with Umtiti and Sissoko.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season but 10 points behind champions Leicester City.
The north London side made premature exits in the Champions League and the FA Cup.
The Gunners will start the new Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Liverpool on 14 August.
