Arsene Wenger’s three-word response when asked about this Arsenal transfer
Arsene Wenger confirms that Arsenal want to sign a new defender this summer
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal will try and sign a defender in the summer transfer window after Per Mertesacker’s injury setback.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of players in recent weeks as Wenger prepares his side for the 2016-17 campaign.
The north London side have thus far only recruited midfielder Granit Xhaka, defender Rob Holding and striker Takuma Asano this summer.
Mertesacker has been ruled out for a number of months after undergoing knee surgery earlier this month.
And speaking at a news conference on Saturday evening, Wenger confirmed that the Gunners are in the market to sign a new defender this summer.
Asked if he plans to sign a defender before the close of the transfer window, Wenger told a news conference in the US: “Yes I do.”
The Arsenal manager continued: “We are still on the market for players. [Be it] at the front or at the back – we are on the market. Unfortunately we are not alone.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and 10 points behind champions Leicester City.
