Chelsea ahead of Premier League rivals to sign Belgium midfielder – report
Chelsea head Everton and Liverpool in the race to sign Axel Witsel, according to The Sunday People
Chelsea are leading the race to sign Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel, according to transfer speculation in the British media.
The Sunday People – as quoted by The Daily Mirror – are reporting that Chelsea are favourites to land the Belgium international in the summer transfer window.
The same publication is claiming that the 2015 Premier League champions are set to beat off competition from Premier League rivals Everton and Liverpool.
Witsel was a regular fixture in Marc Wilmots’s Belgium side at the European championship as the Red Devils reached the quarter-finals of the competition.
However, the defensive midfielder was unable to help inspire his national team to victory over Wales as Chris Coleman’s side were 3-1 winners in the last eight.
The 27-year-old Belgium midfielder scored six times in 42 appearances in all competitions for the Russian side last season.
The former Benfica man has won the Russian top-flight crown and Russian crown during a four-year stay with Zenit St Petersburg.
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table after a disappointing defence of their top-flight crown.
