Dirk Kuyt delivers verdict on new Liverpool signing
Dirk Kuyt backs new Liverpool signing Georginio Wijnaldum to be a success at Anfield
Dirk Kuyt has backed new Liverpool signing Georginio Wijnaldum to be a success at Anfield.
The Netherlands international became Liverpool’s seventh signing of a busy summer transfer window so far after the Reds agreed a £25m deal with Championship side Newcastle United for the midfielder.
Wijnaldum scored 11 times in 38 Premier League appearances in his first season in the English top flight after he moved to the Magpies from Eredivise champions PSV Eindhoven last summer.
The new Liverpool signing will wear the prestigious number five shirt for his new club following in the footsteps of former Reds vice-captain and Denmark international Daniel Agger.
And ex-Liverpool striker Kuyt gave a glowing assessment of the Dutch playmaker following Wijnaldum’s big-money switch to the 18-time English champions.
“(It is) a wonderful transfer for Gini. The best compliment for him was that his name in my time at Liverpool buzzed inside the club,” Kuyt told De Telegraaf – as quoted by Liverpool Echo.
“He was watched by the scouts already in his youth days at Feyenoord as a very great talent. When I played for Liverpool, I heard them frequently say that he would be a wonderful asset one day.
“He eventually ended up at PSV and Newcastle, before moving to Anfield. He is now at a top club in England and he’ll be at home.”
Wijnaldum will have some way to go to replicate Kuyt’s 71 goals in 286 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside outfit during a six-year stay at Anfield.
Liverpool will face Chelsea in their opening International Champions Cup fixture on Wednesday 27 July at Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
The Reds will take on Arsenal in their first Premier League game of the new season on 14 August.
