Estonia boss comments on new Liverpool signing
Estonia Boss Magnus Pehrsson is backing Ragnar Klavan to be a success at Liverpool
Estonia Boss Magnus Pehrsson is backing Ragnar Klavan to be a hit at Liverpool after the defender completed his transfer to Anfield on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old centre-half signed a long-term contract with the Reds on Wednesday as Jurgen Klopp moved quickly to bolster his defensive options ahead of his first full season in charge at Anfield.
Klavan joins Liverpool from Augsburg having made more than 120 appearances in the Bundesliga and boasting more than 100 caps for Estonia.
And Pehrsson is expecting Klavan to impress Liverpool fans in his first season at the Merseyside outfit.
Speaking in an interview with ESPN FC, Pehrsson said: “He has most of what you ask from a central defender – he is calm with the ball, he can build up well, he’s fast, he’s good in the air, he can tackle. I think he’s a complete defender.”
He continued: “He said to me, and also mentioned in the media, that the next step after the Bundesliga was he really wanted to come to the Premier League.
“Now he is there with one of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s fantastic for him and now it’s up to him to show that he belongs there – I’m positive he will.”
The defender has become Liverpool’s fifth summer signing following the arrivals of Loris Karius, Joel Matip, Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic in the current transfer window.
Klavan featured in both legs of the Europa League last-32 tie for Augsburg against Liverpool back in February.
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season.
