Former Liverpool manager delivers verdict on Jurgen Klopp
Roy Evans issues his backing for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp
Roy Evans is confident Liverpool have the right man in Jurgen Klopp to restore the Reds to their former glory.
The 48-year-old is preparing for his first full season in charge of the 18-time English champions after the former Borussia Dortmund head coach replaced Brendan Rodgers in October.
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table after an inconsistent campaign under Klopp, which included memorable wins at Chelsea and Manchester City.
The Reds lost to Manchester City on penalties in the League Cup final before a 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basel in May.
However, ex-Liverpool manager Evans is confident that Klopp can trigger a silverware-laden period for the 18-time English champions once he manages to secure his first trophy as Reds boss.
“He must believe in the club, he must feel like he’s in the right place – I’m sure all our fans feel the same thing,” Evans told Liverpool’s website.
“I think he’s the right guy for us, the fans have bought into it – the players certainly have – and if he can get off to a really good start, and with no distractions with European football, he can concentrate on the league and our cup competitions.
“Hopefully he can come back with a trophy this year and then keep progressing from there.”
Liverpool start their 2016/17 Premier League campaign with an away trip to bitter rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday 14 August.
Klopp has added four new players to his squad this summer after signing Germany Under-21 goalkeeper Loris Karius and Southampton forward Sadio Mane.
Marko Grujic and Joel Matip have also linked up with the Reds squad after agreeing deals earlier this year.
