The Spanish playmaker’s future at Old Trafford has been a source of some speculation in recent weeks following Jose Mourinho’s arrival as the club’s new manager.

The uncertainty surrounding Mata’s situation has stemmed from the fact that Mourinho was the man who deemed Mata to be surplus to requirements at Chelsea and sold the playmaker to United back in January 2014.

Now, Spanish football writer Balague has revealed that Mata is due to report back to Carrington for pre-season training with United on Wednesday, and will hold talks with Mourinho about his future in the coming days.

Balague responded to the following question on Twitter:

Mourinho was officially unveiled as United boss on Tuesday morning and was paraded in front of the media at Old Trafford after signing his three-year contract with the Red Devils.

Mata helped United win the FA Cup last season under Louis van Gaal.
