Harry Redknapp believes Bastian Schweinsteiger could be one of the Manchester United players facing the axe under Jose Mourinho this summer.

The Germany captain endured a mixed first season in the Premier League after the 31-year-old midfielder moved to the 20-time English champions in a £6.7m deal from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich last year.

Schweinsteiger and Carrick, do you need them both? Probably not.

Schweinsteiger’s 2015/16 Premier League campaign was blighted by injuries as the veteran German star made just 13 starts in the top flight and scored one goal in 21 appearances in all competitions for United.

The former Bayern skipper hasn’t previously worked with Mourinho during his decorated career but has been presented with the opportunity to sample the outspoken manager’s methods following the Portuguese coach’s appointment at Old Trafford in May.

However, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Redknapp believes Schweinsteiger could be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, suggesting there isn’t room for both the German and Michael Carrick in Mourinho’s plans.

“You never know what a manager thinks about his players,” Redknapp told BetSafe.

“Probably only Mourinho knows the answer, he will walk in there to a club as a manager, been there many times. He’ll think I like him but I don’t fancy him, so only Mourinho will know, he’s got Schweinsteiger in there, he’s got Carrick.

“I’m a great Carrick fan, I’m sure Carrick’s staying; Schweinsteiger and Carrick, do you need them both? Probably not. Schweinsteiger might well end up being captain.

“Then again, you get the feeling that he might well be one that needs to move on.”

Schweinsteiger helped Germany to reach the Euro 2016 semi-finals before a surprise 2-0 defeat by hosts France in the last four of the competition.
