Insider delivers latest update on Arsenal’s link to Riyad Mahrez

Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli delivers the latest news on Arsenal's link to Riyad Mahrez

Arsenal may have turned to Riyad Mahrez in the summer transfer window after realising that they were not able to sign Julian Draxler from Wolfsburg, according to Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli.

The north London side have been linked with a host of players during the summer but have thus far only signed midfielder Granit Xhaka, striker Takumna Asano and defender Rob Holding.

Reports in the French media over the weekend suggested that Arsenal were interested in bringing Leicester City winger Mahrez to The Emirates this summer.

However, Italian journalist Giulianelli is now reporting that any deal for Mahrez is far from finalised.

Writing in his column for Tribal Football, Giulianelli said: “Julian Draxler, of Wolfsburg, was wanted by Arsene Wenger for the wing role ahead of Mahrez, an old desire.

“So it’s a possibility that the Draxler deal was a non-starter and so they’re going back to Mahrez – but it’s definitely not agreed yet.”

Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season, 10 points behind champions Leicester City, who Mahrez helped to fire to the top flight title as he won the PFA player of the year award.
