Javier Zanetti offers advice to Argentina striker amid Arsenal link
Javier Zanetti has urged Mauro Icardi to stay at Inter Milan
Javier Zanetti has urged Mauro Icardi to stay at Inter Milan amid the ongoing transfer speculation surrounding the captain’s future.
The Argentina international has been emerged as one of Europe’s most-coveted forward players in the summer transfer window after an impressive 2015/16 Serie A campaign.
Corriere dello Sport – as quoted by The Daily Telegraph – reported last week that Arsenal were ready to make an offer in the region of £37.6-£41.8m (€45-50m) for the South American.
However, Icardi remains an Inter player for the foreseeable future despite his agent failing to pour cold water on talk of a big-money summer move away from the San Siro.
Now, Argentina and Inter legend Zanetti has weighed into the debate over Icardi’s future, urging the Nerazzurri captain to remain at the club beyond the summer transfer window.
“He’s very young, he has a lot of potential and he can still grow a lot,”
Zanetti told La Nacion – as quoted by Football Italia.
“He has to devote himself to playing, nothing else. The intention is for him to stay with us, beyond all the gossip in recent days.
“Last year his contract was adjusted and he’s our captain, we want to continue with him but he has to understand that he’s at Inter.”
Icardi was named as the new Inter captain at the start of the 2015/16 Serie A season.
The Argentina international netted 16 times in 33 Serie A games for Roberto Mancini’s men last term.
Zanetti won five Serie A titles, four Coppa Italias and the Champions League during a decorated career.
