John Barnes: Why Liverpool don’t need big-name signings under Jurgen Klopp

John Barnes delivers his verdict on new Liverpool signings this summer

John Barnes believes Liverpool don’t need big-name signings this summer and is backing Jurgen Klopp to get the best out of his new arrivals.

The Reds boss has been one of the busiest Premier League managers in the summer transfer window after adding seven new players to his squad thus far.

Klopp began the summer with the signing of Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius before he completed a £30m deal for Senegal and Southampton winger Sadio Mane.

The Liverpool manager bolstered his defence with the £5m signing of Ragnar Klavan, while Georginio Wijnaldum swapped Newcastle United for the Reds in a £25m deal.

Marko Grujic and Joel Matip have also been added to the Liverpool squad after agreeing deals earlier this year, while Alex Manninger completed a transfer to the Anfield outfit, too.

And Barnes, who previously captained Liverpool during the 1990s, has backed Klopp to get the best out of his new signings despite the lack of big-name arrivals at Anfield.

“Regardless of whatever players he brings in, I trust him to integrate a style that suits them,” Barnes told Sky Sports.

“I wouldn’t be disappointed if Liverpool didn’t sign big name players because he’s signed Mane, Matip… players who he knows he can get the most out of.

“Can the players do what he wants? It doesn’t matter about how good we think they are. No matter what players you have, if they can understand what you want from them and they can do it, you can be successful. All you can ask any manager to do is maximise the players at his disposal.”
