Jose Mourinho admits that he has been very impressed by what he has seen from Henrikh Mkhitaryan since the playmaker’s arrival at Manchester United.

The Armenia international made his first appearance in a Manchester United shirt on Saturday as he helped Mourinho’s men kick off their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Mkhitaryan became Mourinho’s third summer signing earlier this month after the arrivals of Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

And the Red Devils boss admits that he has been impressed by the impact that the former Borussia Dortmund man has had since his arrival from the Bundesliga club and is backing him to fulfil his potential at Old Trafford.

Speaking in an interview with MUTV after Saturday’s victory over Wigan, Mourinho said: “Mkhitaryan is a top-class player and currently at the best stage for a footballer – 27 years old.

“He is magnificent in the way he thinks about football, he thinks very quickly and it’s so sweet how he touches the ball.

“He can play in different positions behind the striker. He doesn’t have the sharpness yet but his performance was very positive.”

Mourinho has been appointed as United’s new manager on a three-year contract after the club opted to sack Louis van Gaal at the end of last season, just days after he led them to FA Cup glory.
