Jose Mourinho: How I convinced new Man United signing to join club
Jose Mourinho lifts the lid on Zlatan Ibrahimovic's transfer to Manchester United this summer
Jose Mourinho has revealed that he managed to convince Zlatan Ibrahimovic to sign for Manchester United by reminding the striker that a Premier League winners’ medal is missing from his trophy cabinet.
The veteran Swedish striker joined the Red Devils on a free transfer earlier in the summer after he left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.
The 34-year-old has enjoyed a glittering career across Europe and Mourinho admits that Ibrahimovic’s decision to join United was certainly not affected by money.
Mourinho is quoted as saying by Metro: “Let’s be honest, he’s very rich.
“He’s made money all his career, he’s won a lot of things, you only come to the most difficult championship in the world if you feel you can do it.
“If you don’t feel you can do it you go to America, China, stay in the French league one more season. So the guy wanted this one more challenge.
“When I told him that I had won in England, Spain and Italy and he hadn’t, that he’d done Spain, Italy and France, he thought: ‘Ahh, I want to go. I want to win every one.'”
United moved quickly to appoint Mourinho as the club’s new manager back in May after opting to sack Louis van Gaal at the end of last season.
The Red Devils finished fifth in the Premier League table and won the FA Cup in the Dutchman’s final game in charge before he was dismissed after two years at the club.
Mourinho, meanwhile, was out of work after being sacked by Chelsea back in December.
