Jose Mourinho provides Man United transfer update on Paul Pogba
Jose Mourinho discusses reports linking Manchester United with a move for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba
Jose Mourinho has insisted that Manchester United have alternatives to Paul Pogba as the Red Devils manager looks to sign a player matching the Frenchman’s profile.
The 20-time English champions have been heavily linked with a move for the Juventus midfielder throughout the summer transfer window so far despite already completing three signings.
Earlier this week, The Guardian reported that United’s first offer of £100m for the 23-year-old midfielder had been rejected by the Serie A champions.
Pogba’s outspoken representative Mino Raiola, who is also the agent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, confirmed that there was no deal in place for the French midfielder on his Twitter page.

Now, United manager Mourinho has appeared to confirm that the Red Devils are chasing the Juventus midfielder despite his reluctance to speak about transfer targets, while adding that Pogba isn’t the Red Devils’s only midfield option.
“You have smoke, you have fire – you used to say something like that, right? I am not going to try to make you naive and believe that we are not trying for one player,” Mourinho told Press Association – as quoted by Irish Independent.
“But we know first of all that the player belongs to another club, which is not a small club. It is also a big club, a club with economical power to fight for their best players, to try and keep their best players.
“Apart from that we know other clubs are also involved and for us it is not kind of ‘are we going to win the race or to lose the race?’. It is not a race, it is just the market.”
Mourinho added: “Before the face, we have the profile. We studied the best we could the Man United squad from the last season. We established the profile of four players to improve the squad, to give us more options, especially adapted to my way of thinking about football.
“We have one space for a midfield player. Everybody speaks about one, but it wouldn’t be a surprise for me if it is not him and it is another one because we went for profile. We have two more options in front of us and we are going to close one.”
Mourinho was named as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May after a disappointing fifth-place finish.
United have already signed Villarreal defender Eric Bailly, Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
