Jurgen Klopp delivers latest injury update on new Liverpool signings
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that new Liverpool signing Marko Grujic had to go to hospital with a head injury
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool signing Marko Grujic suffered a head injury during Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat by Chelsea at the Rose Bowl.
A young boy in this situation is not too cool
The Reds were forced to withdraw the Serbia international at half-time following a collision with Chelsea’s Burkina Faso international Bertrand Traore in the first half of their International Champions Cup clash in California.
Grujic joined up with the Liverpool squad this summer after the 20-year-old had previously agreed to move to the five-time European champions in January, when the Reds settled on a £5m deal with Red Star Belgrade for the playmaker.
Speaking at his post-match media conference in Pasadena on Wednesday night, the Liverpool manager revealed his concern for the midfielder after Grujic was forced to go to hospital due to the head collision.
“The biggest problem for me in this moment is that Marko Grujic is in hospital, because he can’t remember anything. That’s not too cool,” Klopp told the media after a 1-0 loss to Chelsea.
“Hopefully it’s not too serious but of course a young boy in this situation is not too cool. Injuries after games like this in pre-season is the biggest problem obviously.”
Joel Matip, like Grujic, agreed to move to Liverpool earlier this year before he completed his transfer from Schalke earlier this month.
However, the Cameroon international didn’t feature against Chelsea after picking up a foot injury.
But Klopp is optimistic his new signing will be ready in time for the new Premier League season.
“I expect him to start the season,” added Klopp. “But for this, he has to train a little bit more. The first two-and-a-half weeks were really good, he became better and better and then he was out.
“Now I think it is a week or more he has been out. He was in a training group today and hopefully he can be back in team training as soon as possible. The season start at this moment is not in doubt.”
