Jurgen Klopp explains reasons behind new Liverpool signing
The Liverpool manager speaks of his admiration for new signing Ragnar Klavan
Jurgen Klopp says Ragnar Klavan’s past performances against Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool convinced the Reds manager to sign the defender.
The Estonia captain became Liverpool’s fifth new arrival of the summer transfer window on Wednesday after the Reds agreed a £5m deal with Bundesliga side Augsburg for the centre-half.
The last time he played against us at Dortmund they had 10 men and he defended really well to help them get a clean sheet and a win
The 30-year-old faced Liverpool in both legs of their Europa League last-16 clash last season as Klopp’s side progressed thanks to a 1-0 victory at Anfield after a goalless first leg.
Klavan was tasked with keeping Klopp’s front-line quiet during the manager’s spell in charge of Dortmund before the charismatic manager was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’s successor last October.
And the Liverpool boss has revealed that Klavan’s commanding performances against his Dortmund and Reds sides helped to convince the 48-year-old to swoop for the Estonian skipper.
“At the end of last season I knew that if we decided to take somebody in this position he was the one I wanted. Now I’m really happy with the options we have got at centre back,” Klopp told Liverpool’s website.
“I’ve seen up close for three seasons how good his performances in Germany have been and last season we got chance to see him against us – and a lot in preparation – for our games against Augsburg.
“The last time he played against us at Dortmund they had 10 men and he defended really well to help them get a clean sheet and a win.
“He will bring us really good qualities with his defensive intelligence and ability on the ball and he is a left-footed player so will give us extra balance.
“I know that he is not only a very good player but the type of mentality and person who is coming here to fight and to win.
“He has had chances to move to some very big clubs but showed loyalty to Augsburg and now we’ve beaten some big teams for him to come here. I think he has made a great decision!”
Klavan scored four goals in 130 appearances for Augbsurg during a four-year stay at the Bundesliga club.
The Estonian defender joins Marko Grujic, Joel Matip, Sadio Mane and Loris Karius as new arrivals at Anfield this summer.
Liverpool lost 3-1 to Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basel in May.
