Liverpool legend comments on Man United’s pursuit of Paul Pogba
Robbie Fowler discusses the reports linking Paul Pogba with a big-money transfer to Manchester United
Robbie Fowler has described Paul Pogba as “massively overrated” as Manchester United continue to be linked with a big-money bid for the France midfielder.
The Red Devils are thought to be closing in on a deal to bring the Juventus midfielder back to the club he left under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2012.
Jose Mourinho has already signalled his intention to bolster his squad this summer as he prepares for his first season in charge at Old Trafford.
Mourinho has brought in defender Eric Bailly, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan as he gears his side up for the 2016-17 campaign.
Pogba is thought to be another of United’s transfer targets this summer as the speculation about his future continues.
However, former Liverpool star Fowler is not convinced that United will be getting a good deal by bringing the France international to Old Trafford.
Fowler wrote in his column for the Daily Mirror: “Manchester United’s pursuit of Paul Pogba is a case of them showing their teeth… because they can.
“It is a massive statement of intent from the most financially powerful club in the world, designed, I suspect, to show they still have plenty of bite in the transfer market.
“But £100m? C’mon. I’m sorry, but Pogba is massively overrated. Look, he must be a good player because so many people in the game speak about his qualities and you don’t get to the top in Italy without having talent.
“I just don’t see it. He hasn’t really stood out in Europe and most certainly not at these European Championships.
“He’s done OK against pretty limited opposition for France, but what does he bring?
“Energy and athleticism to midfield, but so does N’Golo Kante.”
Pogba joined Juventus from United back in 2012 after being deemed surplus to requirements by Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
