Liverpool linked with bid for Belgium midfielder – report

Axel Witsel is being heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, according to Italian website Tuttomercatoweb

Liverpool have been linked with a bid for Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel, according to reports.

The Zenit St Petersburg playmaker has been linked with a host of different clubs in the summer transfer window so far, including interest from the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has made no secret of his desire to secure a move away from Russia, hinting that he would be open to a move to England or Serie A.

Witsel’s performances at Euro 2016 have done his chances of securing a big-money summer move no harm, too, playing a vital role in Marc Wilmots’s side’s run to the quarter-finals.

According to Italian transfer gossip website Tuttomercatoweb, as cited by the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are one of a number of clubs being linked with a summer bid for the Belgian.

Witsel has scored three goals and has made one assist 29 appearances in the Russian Premier League last term.

The Belgian star moved to Zenit in a £35m deal from Portuguese side Benfica in 2012.

The reported Liverpool target has won one Russian Premier League title and one Russian Cup since his move to Zenit four years ago.
