Liverpool make contact with Barcelona defender – report
Liverpool are chasing Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu to solve their defensive crisis, according to reports in France
Liverpool are in touch with Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu over a possible move to Anfield this summer, according to reports in the French media.
Le Parisien – as quoted by The Sun – states that Jurgen Klopp views Mathieu as a short-term option to solve Liverpool’s defensive problems ahead of the 2016/17 Premier League campaign.
England Under-21 international Joe Gomez has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury which looks likely to rule the defender out for the start of the season.
Former Paris Saint-Germain centre-half Mamadou Sakho is struggling with an Achilles problem ahead of the new campaign following his return to training after his Uefa ban for suspected doping was dropped.
Furthermore, Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno endured a disappointing end to the season and was widely criticised for his performance in the Reds’s 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League final.
The 18-time English champions have already added five new players to their squad in the summer transfer window, recruiting Loris Karius, Sadio Mane, Joel Matip, Marko Grujic and Ragnar Klavan.
Liverpool start their domestic campaign with a trip to Arsenal on 14 August.
