Man United release official statement concerning defender
Manchester United have provided the latest update on Chris Smalling
Manchester United have released a statement to play down fears about Chris Smalling’s health after the defender was taken to hospital.
The England defender is currently on holiday in Bali and was taken ill on Sunday after fainting due to a bout of food poisoning.
Smalling is currently enjoying some time off after his stint with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training with United later this month.
Amid fears about the defender’s health, United posted the following statement on the club’s website.
It read: “Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday.
“The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine.”
It added: “Chris would like to thank everyone for their well wishes.”
Smalling is preparing to report back to Carrington later this month, where he will begin pre-season work under new manager Jose Mourinho for the first time.
The Portuguese coach has been chosen as the man to restore United back to the top of English football following their disappointing fifth placed finish in the Premier League last season.
Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal after his sacking and has signed a three-year contract with the Red Devils.
