Schweinsteiger confirmed his decision to step down from Germany duty last week and retires as his country’s fourth most-capped player of all time on 120.

The veteran midfielder helped Germany win the World Cup in 2014 along with former Arsenal man Podolski.

The 31-year-old made his international debut in 2004 and holds the German record for European championship appearances, having played 18 times at the tournament and helping his country reach the semi-finals in France this summer.

And Ozil was quick to pay tribute to his former international team-mate via a post on Twitter on Friday.

Ozil tweeted:

The Arsenal playmaker is currently enjoying the last few days of his summer holiday in the United States before he jets back to the UK to begin his preparations for the new Premier League season.
