MLS All-Stars 1 Arsenal 2: Player ratings as new signing impresses

Player ratings as new Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka makes his first appearance for the Gunners in 2-1 win against MLS All-Stars in San Jose

Arsenal

Petr Cech (man of the match) The Arsenal number one got down well to deny Giovani dos Santos in the ninth minute. However, Cech was powerless to deny his former team-mate and friend Didier Drogba on the stroke of half-time despite being at full-stretch. A superb Cech save kept out Sebastian Giovinco at the start of the second half. 8/10

Mathieu Debuchy Frozen out under Arsene Wenger last season, the Frenchman returned to the Arsenal side in San Jose. Debuchy did well but was substituted at half-time in favour of Bellerin. 6

Rob Holding On his first Arsenal start, appeared to handle the north London side’s nemesis – Drogba – pretty well. However, after two desperate Arsenal blocks, the 36-year-old levelled up the friendly clash in added time at the end of the first half. Headed over from a super Xhaka corner late on. 6

Krystian Bielik The 18-year-old battled against Chelsea legend Drogba in the first half. Was left scrambling after Drogba beat the offside trap but still managed to net an equaliser. 6

Kieran Gibbs Caught of position as Gibbs could only admire an arching Pirlo pass which played in Giovani. His blushes were spared by Cech, who produced a good save. 5

Mohamed Elneny Covered well to cut out a dangerous low cross in the Arsenal area. Long-range attempt was tipped over the cross bar by All-Star goalkeeper Andre Blake. One of Arsenal’s stand-out players with his calm and measured passing. 7

Francis Coquelin A robust performance as we’ve come to expect from the Arsenal midfielder. 6

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain An early piece of showboating drew plenty of cheers from the MLS crowd. A long-range attempt powered past the woodwork. Looked dangerous on the ball but no end product. 6

Jack Wilshere Quiet start but managed to outwit All-Star captain Kaka with some skill worthy of the Brazilian. Played a delicious through ball to set free Walcott but Campbell’s eventual shot was blocked for a corner. Looked in his element against Kaka and Pirlo. 7

Joel Campbell Fouled by Laurent Ciman to give Arsenal an early penalty. The Costa Rican made no mistake from the penalty spot despite a questionable run-up. Otherwise, Campbell lacked a little match sharpness. 6

Theo Walcott Alert to capitalise on a rare Andrea Pirlo mistake but effort dragged wide. Followed up with a tame free-kick. Led a threatening Arsenal counter-attack in the 15th minute but selfishly failed to square to Campbell or Wilshere. A disappointing performance. 5

Substitutes

Hector Bellerin Offered more attacking threat down the right wing than Debuchy. 6

Emiliano Martinez N/A

Calum Chambers Partnered Holding in the second half. Up against a tricky opponent in Sebastian Giovinco, Chambers was calm and composed. 6

Alex Iwobi Like some of Arsene Wenger’s other half-time substitutions, Iwobi lacked match sharpness. However, the no17 started to grow into the game more as the half wore on. 5

Chris Willock N/A

Gedion Zelalem N/A

Chuba Akpom Scored a close-range winner in the final four minutes to seal victory for Arsenal. 7

Jeff Reine Adelaide N/A

Nacho Monreal His distribution was a tad sloppy following his introduction at half-time. However, the Spanish defender made amends with the cross for Akpom’s winner. 6

Granit Xhaka Received a ball in a tight situation early in the second half from Cech which tested the new signing’s ability under pressure: he passed. His passing was crisp even if his new team-mates weren’t on his wavelength all the time. His powerful free-kick was straight at David Bingham. 6
