New Liverpool signing delivers verdict on Jurgen Klopp
Georginio Wijnaldum discusses his initial thoughts of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp
Georginio Wijnaldum has delivered his verdict on Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp following his move to Anfield from Newcastle United on Friday afternoon.
The charismatic German coach secured his seventh signing of a busy summer transfer window so far after Liverpool agreed a £25m fee with the Magpies for the Netherlands international.
The 25-year-old has signed a long-term deal with the 18-time English champions and has opted to wear the vacant number five shirt following in the footsteps of Daniel Agger.
Klopp led Liverpool to an eighth place finish and two cup finals in his first seven months in charge of the five-time European champions.
And Wijanldum, who spent just one season at St James’s Park, revealed that speaking to Klopp helped to make his decision to move to Liverpool easier following his big-money move on Friday afternoon.
“A great man, from the outside, because I don’t know how he works yet and I have to work with him,” Wijnaldum told Liverpool’s website.
“I always love to watch him, his passion as a trainer, I like how he enjoys the game. He gives something back to the group [with his passion] so I look forward to working with him.
“I met him one time, we had a conversation and it was a good conversation because after I wanted to sign for Liverpool. He convinced me to come to the club.”
Wijnaldum added: “That’s why I liked the conversation we had and after I just wanted to sign for Liverpool. I told my family it was a good conversation and that he’s a coach who can make me better than I am right now.”
Wijnaldum netted 11 times in 38 Premier League games for Newcastle last season.
The Reds will face Chelsea and AC Milan in the International Champions Cup in California next week.
Liverpool start the new Premier League campaign with a game against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 14 August.
