New Liverpool signing makes promise to Reds supporters
Joel Matip is promising goals to entertain Liverpool supporters after completing his transfer
Joel Matip has promised Liverpool supporters that he will chip in with a few goals next season.
The Cameroon international was unveiled as a Reds player at Melwood training ground on Saturday afternoon after he had agreed a deal to join the Merseyside outfit in January.
Matip’s arrival will strengthen Jurgen Klopp’s defensive options ahead of the 2016/17 Premier League season, with continued uncertainty surrounding Martin Skrtel’s Reds future.
The 24-year-old defender scored three goals and made three assists in 34 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke in the most-recent top-flight campaign.
And Matip, who will wear number 32 for the Reds, revealed that he fancies himself as a goal-scoring defender in his first interview with Liverpool’s website.
“I’m a defender, in the air and on the ground, and I’m always looking to play in front and I’m always good for a few goals,” Matip told Liverpool’s website.
The Cameroon international netted a credible 23 times in 259 appearances in all competitions for Schalke during seven seasons at the Bundesliga club.
Matip will join fellow summer arrivals Loris Karius, Marko Grujic and Sadio Mane at the 18-time English champions.
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season.
