New Liverpool signing reveals this Premier League club wanted his signature
New Liverpool signing Georginio Wijnaldum reveals interest from Everton
Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed that Liverpool’s derby rivals Everton attempted to sign the Netherlands midfielder this summer.
There was interest from Everton but Liverpool had more interest. Jurgen gave me a good feeling in that conversation
The former PSV Eindhoven midfielder completed a much-anticipated £25m switch to Anfield last Friday as Wijnaldum became Jurgen Klopp’s seventh signing of the current transfer window.
The Dutch playmaker netted 11 times in 38 Premier League appearances last season but was powerless to prevent Newcastle United from being relegated to the Championship.
Wijnaldum has already jetted out to California to link up with Klopp’s squad ahead of their games against Chelsea and AC Milan in the International Champions Cup this week.
And the Dutch star has revealed that Liverpool’s bitter rivals Everton were also interested in signing the midfielder this summer as Ronald Koeman looked to land his compatriot.
“In that conversation he made me feel really good,” Wijnaldum is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo. “He gave me a lot of confidence, he told me he liked my way of playing football and that he wanted to have me in his squad.
“He gave me a lot of confidence because he said he liked my way of playing football. He said I was a person he really wanted to have in his squad.
“Something like that is always good to hear. It made me happy, especially as it came from such a great trainer like Jurgen Klopp.
“He showed how good he is at Dortmund with all the success he had. It’s always great when a trainer of that kind of ability says he needs you in his team.
“There was interest from Everton but Liverpool had more interest. Jurgen gave me a good feeling in that conversation. Straight after that I had the feeling that I wanted to come to Liverpool.
“Of course Liverpool is a big club with a good history. Everyone knows that. But there had to be a match.
“He’s in charge and if a great trainer like him wants you then it gives you more confidence to come to a club like this.”
Wijnaldum was part of PSV’s title-winning side in 2015 before he completed an £11.4m move to Newcastle under Steve McClaren.
Klopp has already added Loris Karius, Sadio Mane, Joel Matip, Alex Manninger, Ragnar Klavan and Marko Grujic to his squad this summer.
Liverpool will face Chelsea in a pre-season friendly in Pasadena on Wednesday night.
