Paul Pogba should start for Man United alongside this player, says Sky Sports pundit
Danny Higginbotham discusses how Paul Pogba could fit into the Manchester United team next season
Danny Higginbotham says Paul Pogba would have to be deployed alongside a defensive-minded player like Michael Carrick if he joins Manchester United this summer.
The Red Devils have been linked with a bid to bring the France international back to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window as new manager Jose Mourinho looks to revamp his squad ahead of his first season in charge.
Pogba left United to sign for Juventus in the summer of 2012 after being deemed surplus to requirements by then manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Now, the France international is being touted as a potential summer transfer target for the Red Devils as Mourinho looks to bolster his midfield options at Old Trafford.
Sky Sports pundit Higginbotham feels that Pogba would be a great signing for the Red Devils and says that his style of play would be complemented by Carrick in the centre of United’s midfield.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Higginbotham said: “Manchester United were very possession-based last season and they found teams difficult to break down.
“Mourinho will want pace in key areas to turn defence into attack much quicker and if they do manage to get a Pogba, that’s what they’d get; they’re very good running with the ball.
“Pogba’s a brilliant all-rounder but if United did manage to bring him in, you’d probably want that defensive-minded player like Carrick alongside him.
“There are lots of options but Mourinho could then push Wayne Rooney further forward – he’s said he sees him as a ‘9’ or a ’10’ – and maybe move Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the right of a forward three behind the frontman.”
