Paul Scholes makes bold claim about Man United and Paul Pogba
Paul Scholes questions whether Man United target Paul Pogba is worth a big transfer fee this summer
Paul Scholes has expressed his shock at Manchester United’s reported big-money transfer offer for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
The Red Devils are thought to have submitted an offer in the region of £100m for the 23-year-old France international as Jose Mourinho looks to complete his fourth signing of the summer transfer window.
So far, no deal has been struck between the Serie A champions and United, with Pogba’s agent rubbishing media speculation that a transfer was imminent earlier this week.
Scholes played with Pogba during the early stages of the France midfielder’s career at Old Trafford before he joined Juventus in an £800,000 deal after struggling to secure regular first-team football in Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
And the retired England and United midfielder doesn’t believe Pogba is worth his touted asking price given that the France star isn’t a goal-scoring forward like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
“He was a very talented youngster,” Scholes told Sport Witness.
“I played with him and I knew how good he was. He played for the first team maybe once or twice, but from my understanding he was asking for too much money.
“For his age he was asking for far too much, especially for a player who hadn’t played first team football. Okay, he has gone on to great things. I certainly think there has been a lot of improvement. He needed to improve if he is going to be a player worth £86m (€102m).
“I just don’t think he is worth that. For that sort of money you want someone who is going to score 50 goals a season like [Cristiano] Ronaldo or [Lionel] Messi. Pogba is nowhere near worth that kind of money yet.”
Pogba has won four successive Serie A titles and two Coppa Italias during four seasons in Turin.
United have signed Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer transfer window so far.
