Steven Gerrard has a message for Martin Skrtel after his transfer to Fenerbahce from Liverpool
Steven Gerrard dedicated a special message to Martin Skrtel on Friday after the defender’s transfer to Fenerbahce from Liverpool was finalised.
The Slovakia defender has called time on his Reds career after completing a £5.5m move to the Turkish side in the summer transfer window.
Skrtel was a mainstay of the Liverpool side over the past eight years after Rafael Benitez signed the centre-half in a £6.5m deal from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.
Alongside Liverpool captain Gerrard, Skrtel came to within a couple of games of winning the Premier League title in 2009 and 2014 but ultimately missed out.
However, the Slovakia captain did win the League Cup in 2011 after the Reds beat Championship side Cardiff City on penalties in the Wembley showpiece.
Gerrard, who moved to LA Galaxy last year, took to Instagram to send a heartfelt message to Skrtel following his summer move:
“8 an a half years of great service 👏 solid man on and off the pitch . You will be missed mate . Good luck for your future 👍#37 #ynwa”
Only Jamie Carragher, Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Pepe Reina and Robbie Fowler have made more Premier League appearances for Liverpool than Skrtel.
Skrtel scored 16 times in 242 top-flight games for the Reds during an eight-season stay at the 18-time English champions.
