Ray Parlour: This is the key signing Arsenal need to make this summer
Ray Parlour is desperate for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign a centre-half this summer
Ray Parlour has urged Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign a new centre-half before the close of the summer transfer window.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of different players so far this summer, but Wenger has only completed two deals to bolster his Arsenal squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
Switzerland international Granit Xhaka moved to the north London side from Borussia Monchengladbach before Euro 2016, while Japanese striker Takuma Asano completed a switch earlier this month.
Arsenal snapped up Gabriel Paulista from La Liga side Villarreal in the January transfer window in 2015 but the Gunners have continued to struggle at the back with injury to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
Former Gunners midfielder Parlour, who was part of Wenger’s last title-winning side in 2004, is adamant that the Arsenal manager needs a new centre-half to bolster his defensive options.
“For me, bringing in another centre-half is key,” Parlour told Sky Sports News HQ.
“Per Mertesacker’s got that little bit older and Gabriel’s not really settled in yet. Maybe he can get better once he’s more used to the demands of the Premier League but certainly they need another one in there.”
Arsenal finished in second place and 10 points behind champions Leicester City last season.
The Gunners ended the campaign without any silverware for the first time since 2013.
