Robbie Fowler: This Liverpool star will be like new Jurgen Klopp signing
Robbie Fowler believes Liverpool striker Danny Ings can emerge as a key player for Jurgen Klopp this season
Robbie Fowler believes Liverpool striker Danny Ings will be like a new signing for Jurgen Klopp this season.
The 23-year-old centre-forward missed the most of the 2015-16 Premier League season after the striker suffered a serious knee injury in one of Klopp’s first training sessions as Reds manager.
Ings made his first appearance under Klopp in Liverpool’s final Premier League game of the campaign after the England Under-21 international was a second-half substitute in a 1-1 draw with West Brom.
The former Burnley forward has featured heavily in Liverpool’s pre-season campaign as Ings looks to impress Klopp amid competition for places from Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Christian Benteke.
And Fowler, who is currently promoting the International Champions Cup in San Francisco ahead of Liverpool’s game against Chelsea in Pasadena next week, is hoping Ings can blossom under the Reds manager this season.
“The big player for me is Danny Ings,” Fowler told The Sport Review.
“For me, he is like a new signing. He came last year and he looked really, really good in the games that he played but unfortunately he had a horrible injury. He is like a new signing for Jurgen so he will want to do well not only for himself but Jurgen and the fans, too.
“He is the big player and I’m looking forward to seeing if he can do really well and come out of the group and excel this year.”
Ings secured a move to Liverpool under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers after the striker scored 11 times in 35 Premier League games for Sean Dyche’s Burnley side in the 2014-15 season.
The England Under-21 forward has scored twice in six Premier League games, including a goal in Rodgers’s final game in charge as Liverpool drew 1-1 with Everton.
Robbie Fowler and Luis Garcia were at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco to talk up Liverpool’s International Champions Cup games against Chelsea at Rose Bowl on 27 July and against AC Milan at the Levi Stadium on 30 July.
