Steven Gerrard delivers verdict on Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp
Steven Gerrard is optimistic for Liverpool's future under Jurgen Klopp
Steven Gerrard says Jurgen Klopp has provided Liverpool with some X-Factor ahead of the German’s first full Premier League season in charge at Anfield.
The 48-year-old guided Liverpool to two cup finals in the 2015/16 campaign but the Reds lost to Manchester City on penalties in the League Cup final before a 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League showpiece in Basel.
The Merseyside outfit also finished in a disappointing eighth place in the Premier League table as Klopp’s side failed to secure any European football for the 2016/17 season.
However, Gerrard, who called time on his Liverpool career last summer, is feeling confident about his former club’s prospects under Klopp.
“The manager has got that X factor and that little bit of magic about him – the way he goes about things and lifts people,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s website.
“You can see how close he is to the players and you can see he’s very demanding on the training pitch.
“With the experience of two weeks I got last year, I think it’s a very exciting time to be a Liverpool fan. I’m looking forward to seeing how well they do this year.”
Liverpool lost 1-0 to Chelsea in their International Champions Cup fixture in Pasadena on Wednesday night.
The Reds won all four of their pre-season friendlies on domestic soil after beating Tranmere Rovers, Fleetwood Town, Wigan Athletic and Huddersfield Town.
Klopp’s side will take on AC Milan in their second International Champions Cup game at Levi Stadium on Saturday evening.
