Three players Man United could target instead of Paul Pogba
We look at three players Man United manager Jose Mourinho could target instead of Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba
Jose Mourinho could be tempted to raid his former employers should Manchester United fail in their attempts to sign Paul Pogba this summer. The Serbia international was an integral part of Mourinho’s title-winning side at Stamford Bridge in 2015. Nemanja Matic wasn’t immune to Chelsea’s slump last season and the former Benfica man’s decline was perhaps only beaten by 2015 PFA player of the year Eden Hazard. Matic could benefit from a change of scene and United are desperate to improve their options at defensive midfield given the struggles of Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger last term.
Not quite Pogba but Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli is an exciting talent. Former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp raised eyebrows earlier this month when he claimed that he wouldn’t swap Alli for Pogba. Now, the France midfielder has a more big-game experience than Alli. The 23-year-old has already won four successive Serie A titles during a four-year stay in Turin. The Spurs midfielder only has one season of Premier League football under his belt but Alli does look very comfortable at England’s elite level. United are no strangers when it comes to poaching big talents from White Hart Lane – remember Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov. Alli would also be significantly cheaper than Pogba, too.
Toni Kroos was signed after Mourinho’s departure from Real Madrid as the Germany international snubbed reported interest from United for Los Blancos. Two Champions League titles later, perhaps Kroos would be open to a new challenge. The former Bayern Munich man is a classy operator in midfield capable of matching the passing range of Carrick and Schweinsteiger. However, Kroos won’t provide the defensive cover that Kante or Matic could offer.
