The Blues boss made a winning start to his reign at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea were 2-1 winners against West Ham United in the first London derby of the season on Monday night.
Controversial striker Diego Costa scored an 89th-minute winner after Wales international James Collins cancelled out Eden Hazard’s second-half penalty in west London.
Conte took over the reins of the four-time Premier League winners after the 47-year-old coach led Italy to the European championship quarter-finals thanks to victories over Belgium and Spain.
The new Chelsea manager signed Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi in a £33m deal from Ligue 1 side Marseille at the start of July as Conte bolstered his attacking options at Stamford Bridge.
Conte also won the race to sign Leicester City’s Premier League title-winning midfielder N’Golo Kante in a £32m transfer after the France international’s impressive debut campaign.
But the Blues manager is still hoping that the west London side can make some defensive signings before the close of the summer transfer window.
“I think we need to sign some players. We have too few players in defence and we are working with the club to find a solution,” Conte told his pre-match media conference on Friday afternoon.
“We arrive after a season which was not so good but we are working very hard to improve the situation but, if you ask me, the real target of this squad now is very difficult.
“We need to pass more time to have a better answer game by game. I have contact every day but I discuss this with the club. We must find solutions.”
