Arsenal close to completing £20m deal for fourth signing – report
Arsenal are closing in on a £20m deal to sign Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia, say reports
Arsenal are closing in on a £20m deal to sign Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia, according to reports in the British media.
The Times is reporting that the north London club are moving towards a “breakthrough” in negotiations for the defender as Arsene Wenger moves quickly to bring in a new centre-half following the injury blows to Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker.
The 24-year-old Germany international was left out of the Valencia squad who played a Nigeria all-star team on Wednesday, prompting fresh speculation that he could be on his way to The Emirates.
It remains to be seen whether the north London club could push through a deal before Sunday’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at The Emirates.
Arsenal are currently short of defensive options, with Laurent Koscielny only having returned from his summer holiday this week, and Gabriel and Mertesacker both sidelined.
The injury situation leaves Wenger with a headache heading into Sunday’s game against Liverpool, as he searches for his best options at centre-half.
Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season, 10 points behind champions Leicester.
