Arsenal are still in the hunt to sign Germany and Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, according to reports in France.

France Football – as quoted by BBC Sport – are claiming that Arsene Wenger is working on a deal to sign the versatile German defender ahead of the close of the summer transfer window.

The same report states that Arsenal are also interested in Hoffenheim star Fabian Schar as a potential alternative to Mustafi should the Gunners miss out on the Valencia man.

Wenger has already signed one Switzerland international this summer after the Gunners completed a £33m deal for Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach ahead of European championship.

Arsenal are currently facing something of a defensive crisis after injuries to Germany international Per Mertesacker and Brazilian Gabriel Paulista.

Laurent Koscielny is also regaining his fitness after an extended summer break after helping France reach the Euro 2016 final in July.
