Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, according to reports in the media.

Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli is claiming that the Germany international is set to undergo a medical at the north London club on Monday.

The Gazzetto dello Sport writer is reporting that Arsenal have agreed a €30m (£26m) deal with La Liga side Valencia for the centre-half.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a host of potential defensive signings in recent weeks following Arsene Wenger’s mounting injury problems at the back.

World Cup winner Per Mertesacker is currently sidelined through injury, while Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista is also nursing a fitness problem.

Laurent Koscielny missed Arsenal’s opening game of the Premier League season as the French defender continues to recover his fitness following Euro 2016.

The Gunners lost 4-3 to Liverpool in their Premier League opener at The Emirates as Wenger was forced to start with Calum Chambers and Rob Holding at centre-half.

Arsenal make the trip to Premier League champions Leicester City in their next top-flight game at King Power Stadium on Saturday evening.
