Paul Merson states his confident prediction for Arsenal v Liverpool
Paul Merson looks ahead to Arsenal's Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson is tipping Liverpool to hold Arsenal to a 2-2 draw in Sunday’s Premier League opener at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are preparing to welcome the Reds to north London as Arsene Wenger’s men look to go one step further than their second-placed finish in the Premier League last season.
Liverpool are gearing up for their first full campaign under new manager Jurgen Klopp following his appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield back in October.
Arsenal are facing something of an injury crisis in defence, with Gabriel Paulista having joined Per Mertesacker on the sidelines for a number of weeks.
It remains to be seen who Wenger will call upon to start at centre-half on Sunday afternoon, but former Arsenal man Merson is tipping the game to end all square at 2-2.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “The injuries are a major concern for Arsenal. They have one centre forward in Olivier Giroud when their rivals have three or four each.
“Don’t tell me Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott are centre forwards. They might be able to step in for one or two games but you are not going to win the Premier League that way.
“As for Liverpool, they are decent going forward, they are quick and score goals on the break, but again, defensively they are not too good either. I see plenty of goals in this one.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League last season and also lost the Europa League and League Cup finals under Klopp.
