Arsene Wenger has dropped a big hint that Granit Xhaka could be the next Arsenal captain.

The Gunners boss signed the Switzerland international in a £33m deal from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach at the start of the summer ahead of Euro 2016.

Xhaka was the skipper of Monchengladbach for the past couple of season as the Switzerland midfielder helped the Bundesliga side reach the Champions League for the first time.

The 23-year-old defensive midfielder made his Premier League debut against Liverpool last weekend as Xhaka was a second-half substitute in a 4-3 defeat in north London.

Wenger confirmed that World Cup winner Per Mertesacker would succeed Mikel Arteta as the club captain earlier this summer after the Spanish veteran left the Gunners at the end of last season.

But the Arsenal manager has now dropped a major hint that Xhaka could be Mertesacker’s long-term successor after discussing the leadership qualities of his summer signing.

“He’s highly focused and has settled in,” Wenger told his pre-match media conference at London Colney on Friday afternoon.

“He’s got the qualities of someone who can take responsibility.”
